Pages 2 and 3

Pages 2 and 3!
I am actually going back and redoing the first 5 pages of my comic over the winter break. I realized that it needed color and I figured watercolor was the best way for me to accomplish that goal. Bristol board is NOT the best to do that on, so I switched over to watercolor paper on my 7th and 8th page and from then on it will be watercolor paper only! I am very excited...but also quite scared for the journey ahead! Wish me luck!
And of course I will keep uploading all the images I have :)

Sneak Peak! Thesis stuff~

Page 1 of my thesis for this year. The theme is fairy tales and adventure stories. The story I chose is "The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids" by the Brothers Grimm.

And here is the original!

What Time Is It?!

AAAADVENTURE TIME!!!
This was done one day during class. I had watched a bunch of the newer episodes the day before and was super pumped about them. Adventure Time is probably one of the best cartoons ever.

note: I do not own any of the Adventure Time characters!

Popeye?!

These are not totally finished yet (or at least the pictures are not of the finished product) but this is what I am doing in my Comic Storytelling class with Nick Bertozzi. The class is working in 2 teams on a comic in the style of LC Segar about the BP oil spill. It's an interesting (and a bit confusing!) concept, but it is an interesting learning experience. I know I am going to have to work with people for my job in the future, so we all might as well start now! I had 2 different panels to work on for the project, and they don't connect, so if they don't make sense together, then that's fine :P

More Stuff!

Just some sketches for now! The one pictured above is of some new characters that are in the same vain as Mr. Foxworth and Mr. Turtleton! Their names are Fluffy Dog and Little Kitty! I would love to do some sort of project with them someday! Whether it be comics or books. They are just so much fun to draw.

And these are just some sketches that I was doing during a class one day. Trying to draw monster wolfish characters for my thesis at school, a dragon that I wanted to look like Toothless (from How to Train Your Dragon!) and some girl who has a pet armadillo named Gibbons! I would like to use them in a story someday too

"The Yellow Wallpaper"

This was our last assignment for Gary Panter's Storytelling class last year (sophomore), and it was to make an illustration for a book that would theoretically go in a magazine next to the article. My short story was "The Yellow Wallpaper", a story about a woman who is kept in her room with disgusting wallpaper that eventually makes her start seeing things around the yard out her windows.

Scribbles!

Yep! Just some sketches from my sketchbook. I feel like I have been doing a lot at school and not posting much, if any, of it. So I figured I would put up some of the fun stuff I have been doing on the side for now! And I have so much more too! I just feel like if I put it all up at once then I won't have any more to show for a while.
Also, I know the drawing right above this doesn't have feet, but I thought it started out nicely...so I wanted to put it up here anyway XD. It was the first part of my attempt at a 30 day drawing challenge, which #1 was 'draw yourself'. I was also on a Scott Pilgrim kick if you couldn't tell!

The Ragin' Cajun

Aka Gambit! - also, I am pretty sure I spelled Cajun right, if not, please slap me in the face.
ANYWAY, this is from last year (sophomore year) during one of Klaus's classes. Since he is the master of inking he decided to help all of us with our inking skills! I love to ink, and I wish I could do this more often, it was really fun and a good lesson. The above scan is of my ink work on a piece of velum paper over one of the many photocopies that he had brought in for us. Some of it got cut off though in my scanner - woops!

This is what the original drawing looked like underneath!
(I am not trying to steal this person's artwork, I just posted this for show).

This is what my line art came out to look like (in the amounted time we had).
And then I dragged it into photoshop to fix up all of the blacks. Hurrah!

'Walking the Dog'

So here is my (somewhat) finished product of 'Walking the Dog' from that original sketch that I uploaded here. I used my rapidograph pen, some watercolor, and watercolor pencils to create the tones. It could use some more work, and I will upload that sometime soon hopefully!

Lil' Red

This is my first assignment for my thesis class. It was to put somebody we know into a fairytale. It's not my favorite piece of work because I don't think I made the person identifiable enough (I KNOW I didn't make him identifiable enough) but my teacher and all of my classmates said it was easy to follow and it all made sense, so THAT I am glad for! I still have trouble with that sometimes. I also like the way I set up all of the panels, which I feel like I need some work on as well.

The Conformist

This was a totally random assignment from my Literature and Psychoanalysis class from last year (my sophomore year). It was the 'final' for the class, and seeing as we were all art students, she wanted us to somehow represent a character from one of the books we read in the second semester. We could write a 'diary entry' or make some sort of piece about the character. I decided to make a comic that was written like a diary entry! Aha! I'm so good?
The character is Marcello from the book 'The Conformist' by Alberto Moravia. I found this character interesting, mostly because he is tortured on the inside. He has the desire to be violent and to hurt people and things around him, but he knows it isn't normal. He joins the police force which helps him find a way to release all of that desire in some way. I don't remember the entire thing - and we didn't read all of it, but this is mostly about when he was younger and when he was having all of these conflicting feelings about what was wrong and right.

Pinchers for Hands

This is actually my final project from Klaus Janson's class last year (my sophomore year).
The assignment he gave us was to simply do the best page we could ever do for that class, and this was what I came up with. I created the character one day when I was bored in a different class, he actually started out as a Pikachu (believe it or not!). I love it when things like that happen. A drawing starts out one way, but then it drastically changes- making a happy accident.
His name is Derek, and the story is that he is dragged down under the ocean by the two crabs seen above, and is then given pinchers (instead of his hands) to protect the people above the water. It wasn't supposed to be anything, I just wanted to make a humorous 'superhero' story. Hopefully I will get to do more with this character in the future!

Thumbnails galore!

Thumbnails of Domestic Events

Walking the 'Dog'

'Getting the car washed'

These are all preliminary sketches for an illustration class that I am taking for the first semester. It's called "The Genre of Science Fiction", and so far I am enjoying it! I am majoring in cartooning at school, but I wanted to take some illustration classes so I would have some skills in both areas for when I get out of school. And it's nice to get a change of pace. All I used to do in school (before college) was illustrate, and since I have been making comics for years now, it's almost like I have forgotten how to do it (impossible, right?!)! My teacher seems like an interesting guy, he is EXTREMELY talented, but it was expected, all my teachers at school are awesome. So we'll see how this goes!

The first project for the class is a 'domestic event' - something that happens everyday. He wanted us to come up with a bunch of them and find a way to give it a twist of science fiction, subtle or completely blatant. The top piece is really just thumbnails of ideas i could come up with. The second one was one of the two ideas I was deciding on, and the last one is the second idea. He has us draw on toned paper so we can see the difference between lights and darks better, and to be honest, I really enjoy this technique. It forces me to think in a different way than I am used to.

Sketchies

This was actually done on the same page as that wolf character of mine! I am really enjoying drawing on toned paper with colored pencils, it makes me think differently (especially when the colored pencil is hard to erase :/). I drew her with antlers then realized that female deer don't have antlers! Which is why I wrote 'this doesn't make much sense'. Womp Womp. I like it.

Just some random sketches I was doing in my sketchbook. I was watching Pokemon movies, can't you tell?! Latios and Latias are adorable. And Lugia has always been one of my favorite legendary pokemon...I don't care what anybody says!

Bamaaaan

The brighter, less gray version

The original version from my sketchbook!

If anyone gets the reference then they get 5 points. I was watching the Justice League movie at work one day (The one with all the 'Hawk People' from Thanagar), and wanted to draw Batman, because I love him.

New Character

So, these are some new sketches of a new character I have come up with in the last couple weeks or so. I still don't know much about her yet, except for the fact that she is in a werewolf clan or tribe or whatever. She can't transform all the way, so whenever she tries or whenever it's a full moon she only goes half way.

I don't know what to call her yet. So if anyone has any ideas let me know! She's still new, so I don't really know the rest of her story yet.

This is old

Holy Smokes! It's TyrranosaurusLex without her hood! This is old, but I like the picture itself. I was trying out colors to see what I thought she should look like. Also, I had taken a photo of this drawing instead of scanning it for some stupid reason, so now the quality is poop. I tried to edit it in Photoshop, but too much editing started to wash it out :/

Comic Reviews?

So, being that I have obviously not been able to post anything recently due to a bit of an art block and because I am waiting for my most recent comic to be posted elsewhere (which is totally fine, I can wait until then!) I have decided that it might be a good idea to write some reviews for comics or comic related movies I have seen recently. Or maybe even art in general...I also like to read real books, so we'll see how this goes. I have been reading a lot lately, either to keep up with things that I have missed, or just out of pure interest. My friend Jon Gorga (Comic Smithy and The Long and Short Box of It!) already has a blog like that, so I don't want to steal his spotlight, but I feel like I talk about comics enough to be able to write some reviews.

I'll end it with that for now, but I think my first review will probably be Batman related since I am on a HUGE Batman kick lately!

OH Jeez

This may come as a surprise to some of you that I would even drop the f-bomb! But it's only in the title, and to be fair, I was having a rough couple of days. But all in all, I like this comic! It was to show the change and flow of time.

These are A Bit Old.

The grapes are supposed to be concord grapes...because I am just so clever (ha ha!)

These were all done last year in my digital computing class. The project was to come up with a couple ideas for a CD cover (we were going to make an entire cd booklet eventually). I chose Flight of the Conchords, seeing as how they are super awesome and I love them. The order in which I made them actually goes from bottom to top - but whatever. The one where Bret is flying out of the Kiwi is the one that I chose to be the cover, and the back of the booklet has them walking into a kiwi, but I can't find that at the moment. And if anyone gets the Penguin joke from the bottom CD cover then I will love you forever.

And this too -

You've all seen this before, but I wanted to post the color one too.

Princess of Power

This was my very first commission from my previous employer at St. Mark's Comics. It was a birthday present for his wife (they had an inside joke about how she did SO much knitting). Anyway, this was done about a year ago, but I thought I would put it up here anyway.
The top version is the original, and the bottom one was edited in photoshop to look nicer.

Eggs-aduration

So, here is yet another comic from my storytelling class. The prompt for this assignment was an exaggeration. I like the way I drew the car...because I am bad at drawing cars :P

I love technology

Man, I definitely need to get my scanner working correctly. Last night and today were a mess.
Let me just start by saying that I HATE being late for things - I really don't like it at all, and today was supposed to be the debut of my first comic on The Modern Look , but seeing as my scanner pooped out on me, I had to take a couple photos and mess with them in photoshop, which made everything take EVEN LONGER.
Now, I took classes with Klaus Janson, which taught me even more about being late and how it was bad for your reputation. But while getting ready to send away my comic that I had been working on - my scanner decided it didn't want to work for me. So that was when I decided to take the photos. Ugh, what a nightmare.

These Guys are Hardcore

Not my favorite of my colorings, but it wasn't so bad so I thought I should put it up. I have posted the original for this on here already, so you guys should know what's goin' on!

Bed Time for Mr. Turtleton

Here is Mr. Turtleton's very first comic (all to himself!). And I know this may seem familiar...I had totally forgotten that I had already made a comic of Mr. Foxworth running through his house and going to sleep as well. Let's just say this at at the same time as the other one then - they match! I also ended up coloring it for my Digital Coloring final for class. I hope everyone likes it! (The original project was 'Mise en scene' for Gary Panter's storytelling class).

And also - HURRAH found my flashdrive!

Super Sorry :c

Hey everyone, sorry that it's been a while. I have recently moved back home from school for summer break, so everything is packed away somewhere in boxes! Which means that all my scans are somewhere in those boxes on a flash drive :/
I will be attending to that soon though, more content needs to be posted up here.

IN ANY CASE - you should all check out The Modern Look, it's a great site that has lots of interesting articles on it, and I will soon be their new comic artist! I will be the illustrator, while my good friend Mr. Jon Gorga will be the writer! So yeah, you should all check it out because you love me. We should be putting up new comics in a short while!

So don't worry! I will update shortly - but for now, here are some cute pictures of my cat Miso. *as seen above*

Copycat!

The assignment for this was to trace a page of a comic that we liked, then create a page similar to that in the same style. The original is from the Harley Quinn trade paperback. The one that is my own is of my character Tyrannosaurus-Lex who is a super villainess (although mostly just goofy).

I don't own Harley Quinn or anyone from the Batverse, this was merely an assignment and I wanted to post it to show the differences or similarities between the two!
